How To Explain CBD To Your Mom

Let’s be real, talking to your parents about cannabis at any age can feel a little daunting — but there are a few ways to make the conversation go smoothly. Today, we dive into the simple, yet effective ways you can bring CBD into conversations with your elders to share this life-changing wellness hack.

Go Back To The Basics

There’s a lot of talk nowadays about cannabis. Whether or not you live in a legal state, you can find cannabis leaves popping up on magazine covers at your local grocery store, you may hear your personal trainer raving how it is the ultimate post-workout recovery, and your favorite Instagram influencer posting about how it lessened her social anxiety. To put it straight, it’s hard to miss the constant conversations around CBD — unless you live under a rock.

However, for those that are not so trend-savvy, hearing about the shot of CBD they can put in their coffee at their local cafe or the CBD facemask and massage being offered at the local spa can be a bit overwhelming and perhaps spark a few lingering questions. To warm the curiosity, here are a few simple, yet effective ways you can describe your love of hemp to anyone in your family that might be out of the loop on this wellness trend.

What Exactly Is CBD?

Before throwing products into your parent’s medicine cabinet with the hopes that they will jump on board, we suggest getting down to the basics of a few must-know CBD facts — one specifically: what exactly is CBD?

  • CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is one of the naturally occurring compounds in the cannabis plant.

  • This compound is distilled from the stems and seeds of the plant and can be made into foods, oils, topicals, and any number of other products that are safe for human consumption.

  • It is known for its enormous therapeutic potential and appears to play the most significant role in the plant’s benefits. While like THC, CBD is a cannabinoid, it is non-psychoactive, meaning you won’t get “high”.

Why CBD Won’t Get You High

Your mom may be weary of you chatting up a storm about your newest sleep hack, because it’s likely that in her mind she relates this hemp talk to that one time she found you and your friends stoned watching Gossip Girl in the basement.

Put your mom’s mind to rest and give her the in-depth deets on exactly why CBD will not get you high:

  • If your CBD product is hemp-derived, you can be guaranteed more CBD and less THC. Hemp contains more CBD and less THC (the psychoactive component), while marijuana (another strain of cannabis) contains more THC and less CBD.
  • For CBD products to be legal, they cannot contain more than 0.3% THC (the compound in the cannabis plant most commonly associated with getting a person high) – a percent that is guaranteed to not cause any psychoactive effect.

How Does CBD Work?

Talking about the way CBD interacts with the body is a bit foreign to many since these topics were not covered in biology class. We have many systems in our body; a digestive system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, the immune system — and unknown by many, the endocannabinoid system.

  • This dynamic system is a central regulatory system with one main goal: homeostasis. The Endocannabinoid System, or ECS for short, helps keep the body in balance by regulating the immune, nervous and digestive systems.

  • The Endocannabinoid System is a complex cellular network of cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body. This network knows how to process its own endogenous cannabinoids (natural equivalents of the compounds found in the cannabis plant) as well as the exogenous compounds, like CBD, from your hemp-derived supplements. Like a lock and key system, the endocannabinoid system is biologically programmed to be able to use CBD effectively.

A Dose Of Evidence

People also have a tendency to believe that CBD oil is part of a dying wellness trend for “fru-fru”- or “hippie” treatment that doesn’t actually work. This is not true at all. Full Spectrum CBD Oil has the benefit of real scientific studies to demonstrate its efficacy.

  • One study found that a single dose of CBD decreased anxiety in people about to give a public speech. In addition, this study found that people who took 25 mg of CBD for a month reduced their anxiety and had better quality of sleep. CBD has been shown in a number of animal and human studies to lessen anxiety. The stress-reducing effect appears to be related to activity in both the limbic and paralimbic brain areas.

  • Cannabinoids are neuroprotective, meaning that they help maintain and regulate brain health. The effects appear to be related to several actions they have on the brain, including the removal of damaged cells and improved efficacy of mitochondria.

  • CBD has been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect in numerous studies. CBD engages with the endocannabinoid system in many organs throughout the body, helping to reduce inflammation systemically. The therapeutic potential is impressively wide-ranging, as inflammation is involved in various diseases.
