Charlotte Figi and the Plant That Changed Everything

In 2012, a six-year-old girl in Colorado was experiencing more than 300 seizures a week. She could no longer walk. She could no longer eat on her own. She had been through more than twenty pharmaceutical medications, none of which had meaningfully helped, many of which had caused serious harm. Her parents had been advised to sign a do-not-resuscitate order.

Charlotte Figi was in hospice care, and the people who loved her most were being asked to say goodbye.

What happened next did not just change Charlotte's life. It changed the trajectory of an entire industry, a legislative movement, and the way millions of people understand what this plant is capable of.

A high-CBD, low-THC hemp extract, developed by seven brothers in Colorado who had spent years researching cannabinoids the rest of the industry had largely ignored, was administered through Charlotte's feeding tube. Within twenty-four hours, her seizures stopped. Not reduced. Stopped.

What followed was a response her family had never seen before. Days passed. Then weeks. Over the months that followed, Charlotte became ninety-eight percent seizure-free. She left her wheelchair. She learned to eat again. She made eye contact with her parents for the first time in years. And then, she laughed.

Her mother Paige described the moment she saw Charlotte's eyes open after her first dose as a gift. After years of watching her daughter disappear, Charlotte began to come back.  Her response was extraordinary, and remains one of the most widely recognized cases in early cannabinoid research.

The extract was eventually named Charlotte's Web, in her honor. The story reached CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a respected neurologist and vocal skeptic of medical cannabis, who spent time with Charlotte and wept. He reversed his public stance on cannabis in a documentary that aired to millions. Within months, thousands of families had relocated to Colorado seeking access to the extract. A waitlist of fifteen thousand people formed. A company was born. An industry followed.

Charlotte passed away on April 7, 2020, at thirteen years old, during the pandemic after experiencing respiratory complications. Two weeks later, Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared April 7th Charlotte Figi Day. Her legacy is observed every year in the state where her story began.

What Her Story Actually Proved

Charlotte’s story forced a correction.

What her response to CBD demonstrated was that the scientific and legislative frameworks governing cannabis had failed to make a distinction the biology had always made. Charlotte was not treated with high-dose THC. She was not treated with marijuana as most people understood it. She was treated with a precisely formulated, high-CBD, low-THC hemp extract that interacted with her endocannabinoid system in a way that twenty pharmaceutical medications had not.

The endocannabinoid system is a regulatory network present throughout the brain, nervous system, and immune tissue. It helps govern stress response, emotional balance, sleep continuity, immune function, and in Charlotte's case, seizure activity. CBD and other cannabinoids from full-spectrum hemp interact with this system. They support its ability to regulate, to balance, to do what it was designed to do. This reflects what current research continues to explore about the endocannabinoid system, and Charlotte's outcome was one of the most visible illustrations of it the world had ever seen.

The same system that responded in Charlotte’s case exists in every human body.

What her story also proved is that precision matters. Dose matters. Formulation matters. The difference between a therapeutic hemp extract and an intoxicating cannabis product is not a cultural distinction or a marketing claim. It reflects measurable physiological differences. Charlotte was helped by a non-intoxicating compound administered at a therapeutic level. That distinction informs how CURED approaches formulation and education.

Why Her Legacy Informs Our Mission

CURED did not exist when Charlotte's story broke. But the company was built in the world her story made possible.

Her mother Paige understood from the beginning that Charlotte's outcome was not meant to be private. Upon seeing her daughter's response to CBD, Paige made a decision that would shape the next decade of her life: this was to be shared. She founded the Coalition for Access Now, a nonprofit dedicated to passing state-level CBD access laws so that families who had relocated to Colorado for the extract could return home. She traveled state to state, county to county, writing and passing laws so that a zip code would no longer determine whether a family could access a solution that worked. She lobbied Congress. She built coalitions. She kept pushing.

The result of that work, alongside years of advocacy from families, researchers, and industry leaders, was the 2018 Farm Bill, which descheduled hemp and CBD and made them federally legal for the first time. It was an extraordinary legislative achievement. It was also incomplete.

What the 2018 Farm Bill did not do was establish a regulatory framework for hemp-derived CBD as a consumable dietary supplement. That gap still exists. Without federal labeling standards, cannabinoid content requirements, and independent testing mandates, the market has become inconsistent, making quality difficult to verify. Paige has been clear on this: Americans deserve to know with confidence what is in the products they are purchasing. Doctors need regulation before they can discuss these options with patients. Athletes need to know to the milligram what they are putting into their bodies.

CURED was built on that standard. Every formulation we make is built on full-spectrum hemp extract, third-party tested, precisely dosed, and grounded in the science of how the endocannabinoid system actually functions. We coined the term microdosing THC to give consumers a clear framework for understanding what we do and why it is different from high-dose recreational cannabis. We lead with education because an informed customer is the foundation of a trustworthy industry. These are the direct application of what Charlotte’s story demonstrated: that precision, formulation, and scientific integrity are what make this plant genuinely useful.

Why We Are Fighting to Protect It

In November 2026, hemp-derived CBD products face potential federal restriction if regulatory clarity is not established before the deadline. Legislation embedded in a federal government funding bill has created a countdown that most of the 48 million Americans who rely on these supplements are not yet aware of. The work Paige began in 2012, the work that produced the 2018 Farm Bill, the work that shaped the industry and made companies like CURED possible, is at a legal crossroads.

This is why CURED is joining OneHemp, the coalition of leading hemp companies advancing federal regulation of hemp-derived CBD as a dietary supplement. It is the same regulatory goal Paige and the Coalition for Access Now have been pursuing for over a decade: the last mile, as she calls it. Classification as a dietary supplement, with accurate labeling, independent testing, and the consumer protections that standard implies.

We are joining because the mission does not end at the product. It never did. Charlotte's story did not end when her seizures stopped. It became the beginning of something larger than one family, one company, or one plant. Paige understood that immediately and spent the next decade acting on it. We intend to do the same.

Why We Believe in Non-Intoxicating Hemp

The hemp CURED formulates with is non-intoxicating. That is not a compromise or a limitation. It is the entire point.

Charlotte was not helped by intoxication. She was helped by a cannabinoid profile that worked with her body's regulatory biology at a therapeutic dose. The same principle applies to every CURED product. Serenity Gummies are formulated to support daytime stress response and nervous system regulation. Dream Gummies are formulated to support deep, continuous sleep. The full-spectrum hemp extract in both products contains the complete cannabinoid profile of the hemp plant, including trace THC at concentrations well below the federal 0.3% threshold. At those concentrations, trace THC is non-intoxicating. What it does produce, as University of Florida research has demonstrated, is a measurably more bioavailable and more clinically effective product than CBD isolate alone.

Microdosing THC means working with the plant at the level where it regulates rather than intoxicates. It means trusting the endocannabinoid system to do what it was designed to do when given the right input. It means honoring the distinction that Charlotte's story first made visible to the world: that this plant is not one thing. It is many things, and what it does depends entirely on how it is used.

Charlotte Figi did not set out to change the world. She was a child whose parents refused to stop fighting for her. What she gave us, without knowing it, was perspective.

A reminder that precision matters.

That standard carries through everything we formulate and every regulatory effort we support. And on April 7th, every year, we remember where it began.
